The Average Duration of a Miscarriage as reported by Chronicle of World Events
Statistics show that the 4th pregnancy of a woman often ends in miscarriage. US gynecologists talk about how long miscarriages last.
The length of miscarriage is different with every woman. One may experience cramps for a few hours just like when she is having her monthly period. Another can experience a bleeding that can last from a week up to 3 weeks. It will depend whether the woman is carrying twins, the period of her pregnancy, and how long before the body will expel the placenta and the fetal tissue from the body.
Each woman experiences a miscarriage in different ways. In order to be prepared mentally and physically, one should know how long it lasts. The termination of a pregnancy that is less than 20 weeks is called an unintentional miscarriage. About 8-20% of women in the world experience this once in their life. A pregnancy that is terminated after 13 to 20 weeks is called abortion. This only occurs in about 1 – 5 percent of women.
The period required to recover from abortion depends on the stage where the pregnancy was terminated. Emotional and physical symptoms show less than a week before miscarriage occurs. Some symptoms include stomach cramps, bleeding, an emptiness of the uterus, and hormonal changes in the body. Emotional symptoms can last for weeks but it will eventually subside. Pregnancies are different in every woman so an exact calculation of how long a miscarriage will last is not possible. An experienced doctor can tell how long the cramps and bleeding will last depending on factors such as gestational age, the type of miscarriage and the dating accuracy.
If the miscarriage occurs in the early stages, the duration of the emotional and physical stress will be less. If the miscarriage occurs in the later stages, bleeding will happen for a long period of time.
Sometimes, women will only know that they have a miscarriage after an ultrasound. Miscarriage does not manifest itself at a later stage, most of the time until everything is too late.
Reasons for Miscarriage
Most miscarriages happen because the fertilized embryo contains the wrong number of chromosomes. It can be a blighted ovum or an embryo that is implanted in the uterus but does not develop into a baby. The intrauterine fetal demise means that the embryo stops developing and it dies a natural death.
Molar pregnancy is when tumor tissues form inside the uterus.
Miscarriage also occurs when there is a problem with the cervix or with the uterus.
After a miscarriage, it will take a full month in order for the body to go back to normal. If you think that you are having a miscarriage, consult your obstetrician right away. If you are having an incomplete miscarriage, you might have to undergo a surgical procedure called dilation and curettage in order to remove the remaining tissues from your uterus. Talk to your doctor about what are other things that you can do if you want to recover faster.
